In an educational system founded on rigid standards and categories, students who demonstrate a very specific manifestation of intelligence flourish, while those who deviate tend to fall between the cracks. Too often, talents and interests that do not align with classroom conventions are left unrecognized and unexplored in children with extraordinary potential but little opportunity. For twice-exceptional (2e) children, who have extraordinary strengths coupled with learning difficulties, the problem is compounded by the paradoxical nature of their intellect and an unbending system, ill-equipped to cater to their unique learning needs.

Twice Exceptional: Supporting and Educating Bright and Creative Students with Learning Difficulties provides cutting-edge, evidence-based approaches to creating an environment where twice-exceptional students can thrive. Viewing the 2e student as neither exclusively disabled nor exclusively gifted, but, rather, as a dynamic interaction of both, leading experts offer holistic insight into identification, social-emotional development, advocacy, and support for 2e students. With chapters focusing on special populations (including autism, dyslexia, and ADHD) as well as the intersection of race and 2e, this book highlights practical recommendations for school and social contexts. In expounding the unique challenges faced by the 2e population, Twice Exceptional makes a case for greater flexibility in our approach to education and a wider notion of what it means to be academically successful.

A must read for anyone interested in twice exceptionality! This book is a compendium of chapters by experts in the field of twice exceptionality. Leading academics, educators, legal advocates, psychologists specializing in assessment, and related professionals were tapped to write chapters in three sections: what is it and how do you identify it; how do you support such learners; and special populations (e.g. ADHD, Asperger’s, dyslexia, etc.). I’m the parent of two now young adult twice exceptional students and would have found this book invaluable…

I’m so happy I purchased this book because I have a go … This book has so much current information. I’m so happy I purchased this book because I have a go to now for my teacher conference- not that I don’t like them, but now I just feel like I have more substance as being an advocate for my children ; it’s so important to have other options when your child doesn’t fit in the box. Great book

ADHD,a Power to Rebalance is a good complement to this book. I really like the idea of a strenght based approach. I myself developpe an approach to ADHD -ADHD, a Power to Rebalance- based on the strenghts perspective and as a doctor in psychology and counselor I witness regularly the benefits of working hand in hand with the ADHD person and his systems -family, scholl, communauty- in this approach. You can find more about my approach and the concrete empowerment solutions related to it in my book having the same name ADHD, a Power to Revalance…
