What makes this 336-page book different from other American history books is the integration of critical thinking into the content lessons. The questions in this book require deeper analysis and frequently ask for supporting evidence from the lesson. Over time, students who practice critical thinking learn to apply it throughout their education and lives. This book also develops reading comprehension and writing skills, and challenge students to learn new vocabulary.
This colorful book brings U.S. history to life! It is full of fascinating facts, pictures, and maps. It can be used as a stand-alone textbook, supplement to your textbook, or as a review course for older students. The vocabulary and content skills are based on common state social studies standards. This book has both primary and secondary source information. Each lesson provides a passage students must read, followed by a series of questions. Questions are multiple choice, short answer, or short essay questions. Students are frequently asked to identify sentence evidence from the lesson that best supports the answer. Sample answers are provided which identify key points for the essays. In addition, there are section review activities and some bonus activities.
U.S. History Detective® Book 1 focuses on American history from the time of the first European explorers interacting with Native Americans through the Reconstruction Era following the Civil War.
I had high hopes for this resource for my classroom … I had high hopes for this resource for my classroom however I am a bit let down. The resource book comes with a set of readings for the various topics listed in the table of contents and each reading has 9 or so multiple choice questions with a writing question as the 10th. Having each sentence numbered in the readings and having many questions require students to find the sentence that supports their asnwer is a little bit more than typical “search and destroy” worksheets. I was hoping…
Great for learning history and comprehension. Great tool for my 8th grader at homeschool. Easy to understand and answer questions. every sentence is numbered. Student has to name sentence where they got the answer. Has essay questions too. Lessons are short enough for daily work. Answers are in back and provide more than one answer that student finds on written questions.
I love that it teaches the student to go back in … Written from a purely secular standpoint, it has worked well for my homeschooled 8th grader. I love that it teaches the student to go back in the text and find the sentence that backs up their answer. At the end of each lesson, there is a short essay question that prompts them to grasp a concept taught in the lesson. It seems well written and thorough.
